Ganesh Mandir Barsur

Ganesh Mandir Barsur is one of the most fascinating yet lesser-known heritage sites of Chhattisgarh. Located in Barsur village of Dantewada district, this ancient site is famous for its massive monolithic Ganesha statues carved from solid granite stone.

Surrounded by the rich cultural history of the Bastar region, Ganesh Mandir Barsur attracts historians, archaeologists, and spiritual travelers alike.

The Ganesha statues at Barsur belong to the 11th–12th century C.E., a period when Barsur was a prominent center of art and temple construction under the Nagavanshi rulers.

These sculptures reflect the advanced stone-carving skills and deep religious beliefs of that era. Even today, Ganesh Mandir Barsur stands as a symbol of the region’s glorious past and devotion to Lord Ganesha.

A Hidden Heritage Gem of Chhattisgarh

Barsur Mandir

The highlight of Ganesh Mandir Barsur is the presence of two huge monolithic Ganesha statues, both carved from single blocks of granite stone. The statues are depicted in a seated posture, wearing a dhoti and a yognyopavita, representing traditional iconography.

The larger Ganesha statue, measuring 2.25 meters in height, is shown with four arms. It holds modakas and a broken tooth in the upper and lower left hands, respectively. The upper right-hand attribute is damaged, while the lower right-hand holds an akshya mala, symbolizing wisdom and continuity.

The smaller statue, measuring 1.67 meters, is depicted with two arms, holding a parshu (axe) in the right hand and modakas in the left hand.

The sculptures of Ganesh Mandir Barsur showcase exceptional craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism. The calm facial expressions, balanced proportions, and detailed ornaments highlight the artistic excellence of medieval Chhattisgarh.

The use of granite stone has helped these statues survive centuries of natural wear, making them invaluable archaeological treasures.
